Day 14 The Poor Widow
Scripture
41 Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. 43 Summoning His disciples, He said to them, “ I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. 44 For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed—all she had to live on.”
Mark 12:41-44
Also Luke 21:1-4
Devotion
As Jesus sat and watched, the crowd filed through and dropped money in the treasury. Imagine Jesus watching as the plate is passed at your church this Sunday. Many rich people were giving large sums. If you were watching with Jesus as the plate is passed at your church, what do you think as large sums are placed in the plate? What do you feel as you see the check with many zeroes pass your eyes? Then the little lady on the end. The widow. She opens her coin purse. You know the one. The one at the bottom of the big purse. Inside the coin purse she pulls out a few coins and drops them in the plate. Be honest. You would probably think she could do better than that. It would not impress you. Or, you might not even think about it at all. Jesus thought highly of it. She had given more. She gave the most! Why? Because all the others gave of their surplus – their abundance - they gave and yet they had much more to give. She, on the other hand, gave it all.
